Conversations About Creativity in the 21st Century
Cathy Byrd speaks on Skype with photographer Sarah Hobbs on a night when Sarah is testing materials she collected for Overpacked, a set of site-specific installations to be on view in Atlanta for four days next week. Sarah's interest in human obsessions has led her to depict a range of neuroses and human foibles. Known for immersing her viewers in large scale photographs staged in familiar domestic interiors, this time, Sarah invites us into an experiential space: three hotel rooms that appear to be occupied by individuals trying very hard to make themselves feel at home.

Active internationally, Sarah has held positions at the Tate Modern and the Museum of Modern Art, and was a co-curator of the 2010 SITE Santa Fe Biennial exhibition the dissolve.

In Austin, Texas, Cathy Byrd meets seminal video and performance artist Joan Jonas about how context affects each presentation of The Shape, The Scent, The Feel of Things, a project commissioned by Dia Beacon in 2004. Joan talks about the evolution of her transmedia process since the 1960s and the inspiration she gets from working with jazz improvisor Jason Moran. Joan's collaborator in The Shape, the Scent, the Feel of Things (2005-2006), and Reading Dante (2008), Jason will be featured in his own Fresh Talk episode. Joan Jonas and Jason Moran will perform together this September, in Kassel, Germany, during documenta 13.

Iranian-born Mariam Shambayati talks about her multi-media art project Moulinex-Me and the conceptual dinner parties she stages in the Food Cultura Museum. The anti-museum's founders Montse Guillén and Antoni Miralda have generated projects revolving around art and food for decades. They introduce their most recent collaboration, Off Menu—a series of fantastical events that offered a creative alternative to Alimentaria, Barcelona's annual culinary festival.

In this episode, Cathy Byrd talks to a couple of creative nomads from Holland. Artist Iris Tonies and writer Arnout Krediet live on their boat in Port Veil, Barcelona, with their two children. They talk about how they made themselves at home, founded Estudio Nómada and became animators in the local art scene. The last week in May, they'll be projecting films on the mainsail of their boat during SCREEN, an annual city-wide video art festival.

Este episodio cuenta con Papo Colo, un artista nacido en Puerto Rico, que fundó, junto con su mujer Ingberman Jeanette, Exit Art, un dinámico centro de arte contemporáneo. Como artistas y activistas han hecho, desde 1982, un tremendo impacto en la escena artística de Nueva York. En mayo de este año, una exposición y eventos en el espacio marcarán el final de Exit Art, ya que Papo se prepara para un nuevo proyecto: una particular escuela en la selva de Puerto Rico para los jóvenes creativos.
This episode features Papo Colo, a Puerto Rican born artist who founded Exit Art, a dynamic nonprofit contemporary art center, with his partner, the late Jeanette Ingberman. Their work as artists and activists has made a tremendous impact on the art scene in New York City since 1982. In May 2012, an exhibition and events in the space mark the closing of Exit Art, as Papo prepares to launch a new venture, a unique finishing school for young Creatives in the Puerto Rican rainforest.

Conversations About Creativity in the 21st Century
William Pope.L, a performance artist and interventionist based in Chicago and Lewiston, Maine, is presenting a magic lantern show titled Blink for Prospect.2 New Orleans, the 2011 U.S. Biennial. For his project, the artist made a film from more than a thousand images donated by the people of New Orleans. On the night of October 22, he projected the film through the back of an old ice cream truck as it was pulled through the streets of the city by volunteers. Blink came to rest at Xavier University where it will remain on view through January 2012. William Pope.L, a performance artist and interventionist based in Chicago and Lewiston, Maine, is presenting a magic lantern show titled Blink for Prospect.2 New Orleans, the 2011 U.S. Biennial. For his project, the artist made a film from more than a thousand images donated by the people of New Orleans. On the night of October 22, he projected the film through the back of an old ice cream truck as it was pulled through the streets of the city by volunteers. Blink came to rest at Xavier University where it will remain on view through January 2012. This Fresh Talk episode features a conversation with Pope.L, the sounds of Blink in motion and a hint of Don Quixote.

Introducing Fresh Art International
You may know me as an independent curator, a university gallery curator/director or the executive director of a contemporary art center. I’ve connected internationally in those roles, and as an art critic, travel writer, and educator since 1995. My raison d'être lies at the intersection of art and life; I can't seem to separate the two.
My creative practice involves an exceptionally dynamic problem-solving process. Fresh Art International (FAI) is one tangible outcome. This experiential public platform taps into a network of amazing professional resources. A work in progress, FAI will offer a series of open conversations that give and take energy and ideas from contemporary artists, curators, producers, writers, performers, designers, architects, entrepreneurs and other cultural outliers.
My belief is that fresh thinking and positivity are essential to construct a truly creative life in the 21st century. This site embodies my desire for your best possible future.
