Professor Chris Taylor has made Land Arts of the American West an unforgettable learning experience. Through the College of Architecture at Texas Tech University, the program involves a 6,000 mile road trip, camping, a series of remote site visits and an exhibition back in Lubbock. This Fresh Talk episode is a conversation with Chris and students who participated in the 2011 Land Arts adventure.

Cathy Byrd speaks on Skype with photographer Sarah Hobbs on a night when Sarah is testing materials she collected for Overpacked, a set of site-specific installations to be on view in Atlanta for four days next week. Sarah's interest in human obsessions has led her to depict a range of neuroses and human foibles. Known for immersing her viewers in large scale photographs staged in familiar domestic interiors, this time, Sarah invites us into an experiential space: three hotel rooms that appear to be occupied by individuals trying very hard to make themselves feel at home.

In Kassel, Germany, Cathy Byrd meets documenta(13) artist Marcos Lutyens for a Hypnotic Session in the Reflection Room. Based in Los Angeles, the London-born intermedia artist works with other artists and curators to develop events and exhibits that reflect his research into the mind and the unconscious. Marcos collaborated with artist, curator and writer Raimundas Malašauskas and smell researcher and artist Sissel Tolass to create this Hypnotic Session.

In this episode, Sarah Lewis, a scholar, writer and curator, talks with Cathy Byrd about issues and ideas that inform her curatorial practice. Sarah's latest project involved selecting artists Leslie Hewitt, Jacco Olivier and Mike Osborne for the Artpace San Antonio 12.2 International Artists in Residence program. Active internationally, Sarah has held positions at the Tate Modern and the Museum of Modern Art, and was a co-curator of the 2010 SITE Santa Fe Biennial exhibition the dissolve.

Cathy Byrd connects on skype with Sasha Dees, an independent curator/producer/consultant who lives and works between Amsterdam and New York. In the Netherlands, Sasha curates the residency program Open Ateliers in the area of Amsterdam known as Zuidoost. In the U.S., Sasha is the producer of a roving video performance project with Sietske Tjallingii who is the protagonist in Miss T - My American Dream. Their road trips in search of mid-century roadside icons have led them to gigantic versions of a guitar, a blue whale, a sombrero and more.

Fresh VUE: Art Basel + Scope, June 2012

FAI contributor Kesha Bruce shares a glimpse of her encounter with Art Basel and Scope 2012 in Switzerland last week.

Art Basel- The mother of all international art fairs, Art Basel has something for everyone. I spent the bulk of my time in the second building which housed the smaller galleries. It was a pleasure to escape the intense crowds and noise of the main building which I can only be describe as a cross between the inside of an agitated beehive and the mall of America on Christmas Eve.

Liste 17 - Billed as the "young" art fair, Liste 17 definitely had edgier and more daring displays, but not many were successful. I soon became weary of room after room of indecipherable installations and inaccessible conceptual works. I do give the organizers extra credit for the quirky location and taking risks on smaller innovative galleries. And at the bar out front, you could buy sausages and cheap beer which ended up being the highlight of my visit.

SCOPE- My hands-down favorite! The location was perfect and each booth was beautifully curated. Strong adventurous work coupled with approachable art dealers and pricing that didn't send me reeling. What more can you ask for in an art fair?

In Austin, Texas, Cathy Byrd meets seminal video and performance artist Joan Jonas about how context affects each presentation of The Shape, The Scent, The Feel of Things, a project commissioned by Dia Beacon in 2004. Joan talks about the evolution of her transmedia process since the 1960s and the inspiration she gets from working with jazz improvisor Jason Moran. Joan's collaborator in The Shape, the Scent, the Feel of Things (2005-2006), and Reading Dante (2008), Jason will be featured in his own Fresh Talk episode. Joan Jonas and Jason Moran will perform together this September, in Kassel, Germany, during documenta 13.

This episode features Papo Colo, a Puerto Rican born artist who founded Exit Art, a dynamic nonprofit contemporary art center, with his partner, the late Jeanette Ingberman. Their work as artists and activists has made a tremendous impact on the art scene in New York City since 1982. In May 2012, an exhibition and events in the space mark the closing of Exit Art, as Papo prepares to launch a new venture, a unique finishing school for young Creatives in the Puerto Rican rainforest.

In this episode, Chicago-based video performance artist Jefferson Pinder explains the importance of physical exertion in his work. Hear how his fascination with Houdini and street theater led to his new live performance series: The Escape Artist. 

Jefferson makes his first appearance as the Escape Artist at 8:05pm, Sunday, December 4, 2011, in Salisbury, Maryland. The premiere performance commemorates the death of Matthew Williams, who was confined to a straightjacket when he was lynched in front of the Wicomico courthouse on December 4, 1931.
