Fresh Talk: Sarah Hobbs

Conversations About Creativity in the 21st Century

Cathy Byrd speaks on Skype with photographer Sarah Hobbs on a night when Sarah is testing materials she collected for Overpacked, a set of site-specific installations to be on view in Atlanta for four days next week. Sarah's interest in human obsessions has led her to depict a range of neuroses and human foibles. Known for immersing her viewers in large scale photographs staged in familiar domestic interiors, this time, Sarah invites us into an experiential space: three hotel rooms that appear to be occupied by individuals trying very hard to make themselves feel at home.

Fresh Talk: Regina Frank

Listen to this episode.

Conversations About Creativity in the 21st Century

Now living a seaside village just outside Lisbon, German artist Regina Frank has expanded on her central theme, The Artist Is Present, for more than two decades. Regina talks with Cathy Byrd about the political and cultural issues that interest her and how her meditative installation projects explore the tension between analog and digital media. Of Note: For Hermes Mistress(1994), the artist lived inside a remarkable red dress at Exit Art, NYC.

Janet Biggs: No Limits

Janet Biggs, In the Cold, 2010, video still
I’m taking a day trip to view a solo exhibition featuring the video art of Janet Biggs at the Tampa Museum of Art. A mid-career survey, No Limits is beautifully presented. The ponderous amount of technology that made possible the encounter of 12 video projects is almost entirely out of view. I’ve followed Janet's trajectory for the past ten years and couldn’t resist the opportunity to walk through an absolute wonderland of her amazing projects. I’ll be posting a podcast of my conversation with Janet later this month.

No Limits is on view at the Tampa Museum of Art through January 8, 2012.
